Unshackle Upstate Director discusses Workers Compensation in Seneca County
(Seneca Falls, NY) The Seneca County Chamber of Commerce recently welcomed Greg Biryla, Executive Director of Unshackle Upstate, to Seneca Falls as part of the Chamber’s Coffee & Conversation Series sponsored by Holiday Inn Waterloo/Seneca Falls.
Biryla reviewed several reforms supported by a coalition of business groups, including the Seneca County Chamber of Commerce, intended to improve the workers compensation system in New York State. Among the proposed reforms, the coalition has identified: updating impairment guidelines, restricting Scheduled Loss of Use (SLU) awards to those with legitimate impairments and defining “date of injury” for the commencement of duration caps on Permanent Partial Disability (PPD). The coalition estimates that adoption of those three reforms would reduce the costs associated with workers compensation insurance by as much as 20 percent.
“New York State workers compensation rates are among the highest in the nation,” said Jeff Shipley, President of the Seneca County Chamber of Commerce. “These reforms are desperately needed to help our local businesses succeed and improve the cost competitiveness of our community for future economic development.”
