Seneca County Chamber of Commerce Presents 2014 Small Business of the Year Award: Muranda Cheese Company

Muranda Cheese Company(Seneca Falls, NY-) The Seneca County Chamber of Commerce has announced that Muranda Cheese Company of 3075 Route 96 in Waterloo, was selected as the Chamber’s 2014 Small Business of the Year recipient.  The award was announced and presented at the Chamber’s Annual Membership BBQ event, held at Knapp Vineyard Winery and Restaurant in Romulus on July 23. Muranda Cheese Company was one of four businesses nominated and voted on by Chamber membership and committees.  Additional nominees included Downtown Deli of Seneca Falls, Cayuga Lake Creamery of Interlaken, and FingerLakes1.com of Seneca Falls.

Muranda Cheese Company, owned by Tom and Nancy Murray, opened in 2007 as a creative way to “keep busy” for Tom and Nancy’s family. The business stemmed off of their first-generation dairy farm that had been in operation for over 21 years. Unlike larger dairy farms that assign a number identification system to their livestock, each animal at Murray’s farm receives the personalized attention of having their own name. This attention to detail continues for Muranda Cheese, with a mission for its customers to enjoy the goodness of local quality milk in products not found in retail stores. The business model is focused around using that quality milk which comes from some of the world’s most well-known Registered Holsteins, and results in the fine quality of cheese that is produced. This final product differs from others as it is an all-raw milk cheese- or not pasteurized- but instead aged for an extended period of time.

Today Muranda Cheese Company employs a team of eight.  A thriving member of the Seneca County Chamber of Commerce since 2010, the business continues to be a preferred stop and attraction for Seneca County’s agritourism industry as well, and is a highly favored location along the Finger Lakes Cheese Trail. Muranda Cheese Company has also been critically acclaimed at the state level, being recently chosen as one of four featured filming destinations for I Love New York’s upcoming fall TV commercials.

Nearly 175 chamber and community members attended the 2014 Membership BBQ event in anticipation and support of the Small Business of the Year Award presentation.  The program was developed by the Chamber in 2007 to recognize and celebrate the impact that small businesses have on local communities.  Small businesses compose nearly 98 percent of businesses in New York State and account for more than half of the state’s private sector employment.

The Chamber would like to congratulate all of the businesses who were nominated this year, and extend its most sincere thanks to all of the attendees, sponsors, donors and volunteers that helped make the event possible. Catering was provided by Ace Automatics, formerly Manhill Food Service. Entertainment was provided by The Casey McDonald Band. Event sponsors included: Becker McLean Company, Chemung Canal Trust Company, Finger Lakes Federal Credit Union, Generations Bank, Gould Hotel, Holiday Inn, Lago Resort & Casino, Lyons National Bank, Ovid Community Health, Savannah Bank, Select Eurocars Inc., and Sessler Companies.  Donations for the event were made possible by Knapp Vineyard Winery & Restaurant; Finger Lakes Tables and Chairs, Waterloo/Seneca Falls Holiday Inn, Nugent Hardware, and Wadhams Enterprises.
